I own a vending business here in Estes Park, Colorado, and I give the Senior Center chips and donuts to use in their center and for the Meals on Wheels. The cook at the center knew that I was a diabetic so he gave me some Splenda® to try. He said it was new and thought I would like it. I took it home and made some oat meal. It was really good and left no after taste at all.
Now this whole time I was trying to make a BBQ sauce that I as a diabetic could use and also tasted good. I tried all sorts of artificial sweeteners and they all left a bitter after taste. All my friends (who I like to call "my guinea pigs") keep telling me what I was doing different with my sauce because it just didn't taste the same. Then I tried the Splenda® and the taste was really close to my old BBQ sauce. My wife, Elaine, said that the taste was "still off a little bit". Then I found Colorado Buffalo Salt at Sam's Club, and that gave my sauce the little kick it needed.
Now one more problem had to be solved. I had to find sugar free maple syrup in bulk, that proved to be an impossible task, so I had to make my own out of maple and Splenda®.
After putting all my new ingredients together I made a new batch of my BBQ sauce and tried it on my friends. They said that this was the way my sauce should taste. That was when I told them that it was a no sugar added BBQ sauce. They couldn't believe that it could taste so good and have no sugar added to it. That was the beginning of Biggin's Signature BBQ Sauce.
At first I just made it for family and friends. Then, I purchased some bottles off the internet and bottled some BBQ sauce for presents. That went over real well. I had people asking for more so they could give the sauce away as presents too. A bottle ended up at a BBQ house here in my town. The owner asked if he could get it in gallons for the restaurant. It sort of grew from there. To date, my sauce has been to Colorado, Texas, Oklahoma, Utah, Kansas and South Carolina, all with good reviews. So, my wife and I decided that we had to pursue it further. We now have the Doss Consulting Firm working for Biggin's. Mr. Doss has been taking my sauce to the major grocery chains to get Biggin's BBQ Sauce on their shelves.
Everyone that has tried Biggin's BBQ Sauce has told me that they can't believe that there is no sugar added to the sauce and that the taste is excellent. Biggin's Signature BBQ Sauce is very good on chicken, pork, ribs and beef, giving all a very good taste. I've even had people tell me that they have used it on rice, pasta and even made a dip out of my BBQ sauce.
Biggin's Signature BBQ Sauce also took a 5th place in the Peoples Choice Award in the Wichita, Kansas BBQ Cook off. We felt that was good for our first BBQ Cook Off.
